Your Moving Checklist:
How to Prepare for
a Smooth Move
Moving doesn't have to be stressful — if you plan ahead. A clear, phased approach ensures nothing gets missed, costs stay manageable, and moving day feels like the beginning of something exciting rather than a logistical emergency.
Read
Plan Ahead. Move with Confidence.
The difference between a chaotic moving day and a smooth one comes down entirely to preparation. Start early, work through each phase systematically, and your move becomes one of the most exciting days of the process.
The Plan
Three Phases.
One Smooth
Moving Day.
The secret to a stress-free move is breaking it down into manageable phases and starting earlier than you think you need to. Most people underestimate how much there is to organise — not just the physical packing, but the administrative tasks, utility changes, and coordination that need to happen in the right order to avoid last-minute chaos.
The three-phase approach below gives you a clear, sequenced plan from six weeks out through to moving day itself. Work through each phase and you'll arrive at your new home with nothing forgotten and everything in place.
Phase 01
4–6 Weeks Before
Book your removalistsQuality removalists fill up fast — especially on weekends and at month-end. Get at least three quotes, check reviews, and confirm your booking in writing with a deposit.
Start packing non-essentialsBegin with off-season clothing, books, artwork, spare linen, and items in storage. Label every box clearly with contents and destination room. Don't wait — early packing removes the panic.
Notify utility providersContact your electricity, gas, water, internet, and phone providers. Arrange disconnection at your current address and connection at the new one, timed to settlement or lease commencement.
Declutter before you packMoving is the perfect opportunity to shed what you no longer need. Sell, donate, or dispose of anything you wouldn't want in your new home. Moving less saves time and money.
Source packing materialsGather boxes, bubble wrap, packing tape, and marker pens. Ask local businesses or supermarkets for free boxes, or hire plastic moving crates to reduce waste.
Phase 02
1–2 Weeks Before
Confirm moving detailsReconfirm your removalist booking — date, time, access requirements, and any special items like pianos or fragile antiques. Confirm settlement time with your conveyancer and key collection arrangements.
Pack your essentials boxSet aside one clearly marked box (or bag) of items you'll need on the first night: phone charger, toiletries, medications, a change of clothes, kettle, tea or coffee, snacks, and important documents.
Redirect your mailSet up mail redirection through Australia Post for a minimum of six months. Update your address with your bank, Medicare, the ATO, electoral roll, insurance providers, subscriptions, and any other accounts.
Finish packing all roomsAll rooms except daily essentials should be fully packed. Disassemble any furniture that needs it and wrap pieces carefully. Keep hardware (screws, bolts) in labelled zip-lock bags taped to the relevant furniture.
Notify schools and servicesIf you have children, notify their school of the move. Update your GP, dentist, and any other regular service providers with your new address.
Phase 03
Moving Day
Do a final cleanLeave your property in the condition required by your contract or tenancy agreement. A professional clean is often worthwhile — particularly for renters where bond return depends on it.
Check every room, cupboard & spaceWalk through every room, wardrobe, cupboard, garage, and outdoor area before the removalists depart. Check the roof cavity and garden shed. It is easy to leave something behind once the furniture is gone.
Read and record utility metersTake photos of your electricity, gas, and water meters at your old and new addresses on moving day. This protects you from billing disputes.
Hand over keysReturn all keys, remotes, access cards, and security fobs to the agent or buyer as agreed. Retain nothing — an incomplete key handover can create legal complications.
Collect your new keys & settle inConfirm settlement has occurred with your conveyancer before collecting keys. Once inside, check that all utilities are connected, do a walk-through condition check of the new property, and take your first breath — you've made it.
The three-phase approach works because it distributes the effort of moving across several weeks rather than concentrating it into an overwhelming few days. Each phase has a clear focus — planning and logistics, packing and administration, and finally execution — which means you always know what you should be doing and when.
Resist the temptation to skip ahead or leave things to the last minute. Tasks that seem easy in isolation become genuinely stressful when they pile up in the week before moving day. The checklist below is your complete reference — print it out and work through it methodically.
The Details
What Most
People Forget
When Moving
Even well-organised movers regularly overlook certain tasks — often the administrative ones that don't feel urgent until they become problems. These four areas catch people out most often.
Often Forgotten 01
Updating Your Address Everywhere
Most people update their bank and a few obvious accounts — but the full list is much longer. The ATO, Medicare, electoral roll, your driver's licence (legally required within one month of moving in South Australia), vehicle registration, insurance policies, superannuation fund, loyalty programs, online shopping accounts, and magazine or streaming subscriptions. Work through your bank statements to identify every organisation that might have your old address on file.
Often Forgotten 02
Insurance Coverage During the Move
Your home and contents insurance situation changes on moving day. Check with your insurer whether your belongings are covered in transit, at the old address, and at the new one — and from what point the new property is insured. Many people inadvertently have a gap in coverage. Arrange your new home insurance to commence from the date of settlement, not from when you physically arrive.
Often Forgotten 03
Packing an Essentials Box
This is consistently one of the most valuable things you can do — and consistently the most overlooked. When everything else is in boxes and you don't know which one has your phone charger or your child's favourite toy, having one clearly labelled box of essentials changes the first night entirely. Pack it last so it comes off the truck first, and include everything you need to function for 24 hours without unpacking anything else.
Often Forgotten 04
Reading Utility Meters on the Day
Photographing the electricity, gas, and water meter readings at both your old and new property on moving day takes two minutes and can save significant money. Without these records, if there's a billing discrepancy later — perhaps because a final bill is generated based on an estimate rather than an actual reading — you have no way to dispute it. The photos are your evidence.

Smarter Ways
to Move
in Adelaide
These practical tips go beyond the basics — they're the approaches that experienced movers and real estate professionals use to reduce stress, save money, and make the process as seamless as possible.
Move Midweek if You Can
Removalists are significantly cheaper on weekdays than weekends — sometimes by 20–30%. If your settlement or lease start allows flexibility, a Tuesday or Wednesday move can deliver real savings, and removalists are often less rushed and more attentive than on a busy Saturday.
Label Boxes by Room, Not Contents
Rather than writing "books, vases, photo frames" on every box, simply write the destination room — "Main Bedroom", "Kitchen", "Study". It's faster to label, faster for removalists to place, and much faster when you're unpacking. Add a brief note only for fragile items.
Don't Pack Your Toolbox Last
When you arrive at your new home, you'll almost certainly need a screwdriver, a drill, or a hammer within the first hour — to reassemble furniture, hang curtains, or mount a TV. Keep your basic toolkit accessible and load it last so it's easiest to unload first.
